The Parish

Burnham Overy is a civil parish on the north coast of Norfolk, England.

Burnham Overy Town is the location of our parish Church, St Clement’s and Brothercross.

In the Staithe you will find a playground, sports field, bus stops for the coast hopper, The Hero Pub, ferry to Scolt Head, walk to Holkham Beach, kayak hire at the Boat House and the Hard form where you can launch boats.

To find out more visit our Community Links page.  Please visit our parish by bus if possible – parking is limited in the parish.  Burnham Overy Staithe has no car park though people often park on the Hard by the Staithe.

Please note the Hard FLOODS at some HIGH TIDES so do not park there unless you are familiar with the state of the tide.  Every year several cars get lost, don’t let it be yours.

The Parish of Burnham Overy includes Burnham Overy Town and Burnham Overy Staithe.

In modern times a distinction is often made between the two settlements of Burnham Overy Town, the original village adjacent to the medieval parish church and now reduced to a handful of houses, and Burnham Overy Staithe, a rather larger hamlet about 1-mile (1.6 km) away and next to the creek-side harbour.

The villages name means ‘Homestead/village on the River Burn’ or perhaps, ‘hemmed-in land on the River Burn’. ‘Overy’, meaning ‘Over the river’, was added to distinguish it from the other Burnhams in Norfolk.
